Muslims in America since 9/11:
Interview with Marwan Kreidie

Length: 0:05:51.      Uploaded 11 Dec 2011.

Note: The voices on this recording are those of
Maiken Scott and Marwan Kreidie. I can take no credit
for the interview itself; I am responsible only
for the editing.

When Maiken Scott, behavioral health reporter at WHYY-FM and Executive Producer of "Voices in the Family," set out to produce a documentary about post-traumatic stress in America in the years since the 9/11 attacks, one angle she hoped to include was the perspective of the Muslim community.

As Maiken's assistant on this project, I contacted a Philadelphia Islamic society and was connected to Marwan Kreidie, who is a prominent figure in Philadelphia government and policy and a leading voice of the local Arab community. Maiken conducted this interview with Marwan in August 2011. I edited the interview down into the form presented here.

Ultimately, this piece did not fit into the fabric of the documentary ("Out of the Shadows") and was not used in that context. As of 11 Dec 2011, this is the only site where this interview has been made public.

The "NERDS" episode

I did much of the work behind getting the topic of 'nerds' and anti-intellectualism covered on "Voices in the Family" (4/4/2011).  I pitched the topic, suggested questions for the interview, gathered stories from my self-identifying "nerdy" friends via social media platforms, and wrote and produced the promo.  I also agreed to be interviewed and share my own story of growing into and coming to love my identity as a nerd.

Vox Pop segments from Voices in the Family

As the intern for Voices, I am occasionally asked to go out on the street to
gather audio segments to support upcoming shows.  I then edit together what
I think were the best responses, making sure to preserve voices of people
of a variety of ages, ethnicities, and social backgrounds.  These are all people I
had never met before, responding to a question I posed to them on the spot.

The "Lure of Scary Things" is a Halloween segment from the 10/31/2011 episode.
The segment was somewhat abbreviated for the broadcast, but I have posted it
here in full.

The "Spirituality and Technology" segment was recorded amidst the bustling lunch
rush at Reading Terminal Market.  I asked people what sort of impact technology
is having on their spiritual lives.  The segment aired in the 5/23/2011 episode of
Voices in the Family.

The third and fourth of these segments were both recorded on the street near
WHYY's studios at 6th and Arch Streets in Philadelphia.  In the third, I asked
whether people had experienced a fear of intimacy (try asking that to a stranger
while shoving a microphone in his face! 7/25/2011) and in the last I asked
whether people thought they were compassionate with themselves (3/14/2011).
